Secluded Shores of Pemba Island

Pemba is often referred to as Zanzibar’s forgotten sister, lusher, quieter, and far less developed than the main island. Fundu Lagoon is nestled along a stretch of unspoiled coastline, hugged by dense tropical forest and the turquoise waters of Wambaa Bay. The only way to reach the property is via a traditional dhow or speedboat, which sets the tone for the rest of your stay: immersive, unhurried, and wildly beautiful.

Organic, Elevated, and Effortlessly Cool

Built with a light touch and deep respect for its surroundings, Fundu’s architecture blends seamlessly into the landscape. Thatched roofs, polished wooden walkways, and driftwood accents create a Robinson Crusoe elegance, while each suite is perched either by the beach or raised on stilts within the jungle canopy.

The resort offers 18 rooms, including four beachfront suites and two superior suites with private plunge pools. Expect open-air bathrooms, ocean-facing decks, oversized daybeds, and the calming hush of waves as your soundtrack.

From Tide to Table

The dining at Fundu is quietly exceptional, unpretentious yet refined. Meals shift with the tides and the catch of the day, celebrating Swahili flavors and local ingredients. Whether it’s grilled lobster on the jetty, breakfast with ocean views, or cocktails under the stars at the jetty bar, every bite is elevated by the setting.

Guests can also enjoy private beach dinners and pop-up dining experiences crafted by the chef and crew.

Island Conservation & Community Care

Fundu Lagoon operates with sustainability at its core. It is a proud supporter of Misali Island Conservation, a marine-protected sanctuary home to endangered coral species and sea turtles. The retreat also works closely with local communities, supporting schools, clean water initiatives, and cultural preservation projects.

Rainwater harvesting, solar power usage, and eco-sensitive building materials reflect the team’s deep commitment to protecting the fragile Pemba ecosystem.

Getting There

Guests typically fly into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Zanzibar, then connect via a short domestic flight to Pemba Airport (PMA). A boat transfer (included) takes you across Wambaa Bay directly to Fundu’s jetty,  a dramatic and memorable arrival.

Why Fundu Belongs on Your Africa Wishlist

Fundu Lagoon is not about five-star excess, it’s about soul. It’s a place for barefoot romance, quiet celebration, and salty skin days. Ideal for honeymooners, solo escapees, or travelers seeking something rare and restorative, Fundu rewrites the idea of luxury, replacing marble and menus with moonlight and mangroves.
