Olepangi Farm: Where African Safari Enchantment Meets Luxurious Farm Stay
Nestled amidst the rugged beauty of Laikipia, Olepangi is more than just a boutique hotel, it is a testament to passion, resilience, and the transformative power of nature and being. Founded by Elizabeth Loker and her late husband Clinton Lucy, this hidden gem emerged from a barren expanse of dry, unyielding land. Their vision? To create a sustainable farm that would thrive against all odds.
In 2014, Olepangi Farm sprouted its roots, blossoming into an ever-changing garden. A 1.5-acre vegetable patch burst forth with life, while a compact yet efficient dairy herd grazed contentedly. But it is not just about what is on the plate; it is about where it comes from. Every meal at Olepangi features their own organic produce, complemented by locally sourced ingredients of the highest quality.
The journey began humbly, in a tent, as Elizabeth and Clinton pieced together adjoining plots of land. No running water nor electricity, just determination and a dream. What was initially a family weekend escape soon evolved into something grander, a riding safari company and an incredibly unique lodge
.Horses became integral to the Olepangi story. From a modest herd of seven, they multiplied to 10, 15 even 20 strong. Breeding mares added their own hoofprints to the landscape, embodying the belief that there can never be too many horses. These majestic creatures gallop through paddocks, bridging the gap between guests and the natural world.
Enter Liz Calabrese, an esteemed architect from Vermont. A pioneer in Biophilic Design, Liz lent her expertise to Olepangi. The Round House, the Party House, and the curvaceous Olepangi House all bear her creative signature. Then there is the pool, inspired by the ancient Persian “boteh” symbolizing fertility and the tree of life. Each structure invites guests to connect with nature, blurring the boundaries between indoors and out.
Beyond its lush gardens and captivating architecture, Olepangi thrives as a hub of community engagement. Their commitment to their neighbours extends beyond mere hospitality; it is about fostering connections and creating shared memories. Through their community program, they introduce children to the world of horses and horse management.
So, when you step onto Olepangi’s soil, remember this, it is not just a hotel, it is a living testament to passion, sustainability, and the harmonious dance between humans and the land they tread.
